Me at Tesco …

Hi, I’m Rishi, Head of Software Development at Tesco.

The early days…

“A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for”

Imagine this…! One day you wake up to find yourself in an interesting role where you have been asked to bring digital transformation to a 100 year old company. You meet your team on day one, stakeholders on day two, peers on day three by day four you’re taking a trip to the United Kingdom to kickstart the journey with your product team and understand the awesome product you would build.  Holi is around the corner and you feel confident that this is going to be a colourful career journey with your talented team.

The type of work …

“You’ve got to get up every morning with determination if you’re going to go to bed with satisfaction.”

You deliver the product using React, Spring boot, Elasticsearch, Cassandra with kubernetes clusters running on Hybrid cloud. The impact of your work unlocks even more opportunities, and you set up a team in Krakow and then in Budapest. Now you have Product and Program teams in the UK and engineering teams in Poland, Hungary and India, effectively supporting customers in Asia, Europe and UK through a truly distributed agile development culture. To increase the speed of execution you expand operations and start hiring graduates from the best engineering colleges in India.

A typical day…

“There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.”

Apart from scrum ceremonies , you attend various architecture and design sessions. As part of a global team you meet various stakeholders, remove blockers to progress, meet customers and understand new product features. You build your skills by attending conferences worldwide, learning online and working with other brilliant technologists. You make sure that you and your team have the technological edge you need to succeed, because nobody tries harder for customers than Tesco.

No day is complete without celebrating the great things you do as a team. You cut cakes with them, you play drums with them, you compete in hackathons for fun, and you feel inspired every day when you see them working hard and playing hard.

Looking forward…

“The joy lies in sharing, whatever goes around comes around”

Every little helps. From breast cancer awareness campaigns to shelters for the elderly, from sponsoring education to adopting villages you get to make a difference. You help doubling up our capacity to serve during the COVID-19 crisis. You contribute to PM funds and help donating free masks, gloves and sanitizers. You have the support of Tesco helping you give back to society.

The ‘You’ in this story is me, and this has been my career at Tesco. Do you want this to be your story, or perhaps you want to be able to write your own? At Tesco it feels like anything is possible, and your next chapter could be building the future of retail.
