Tesco Bengaluru hosts Technology Day - Ignite 2016

The second edition of the event focused on technology that serves shoppers a little better every day

[Bengaluru, 30 September, 2016]: Tesco Bengaluru, the technology and retail operations team for Tesco worldwide, today, hosted its second edition of Technology Day - Ignite 2016 to recognise the importance of improving customers’ shopping experience through technology. The keynote speakers for the day included industry experts Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and Ganesh Krishnamurthy, serial entrepreneur. Also present at the event was renowned cricketer Javagal Srinath.


This year, the event saw a turnout of over 1000 Tesco Bengaluru colleagues. The day entailed key note addresses and panel discussions focusing on how technology is fundamental to redesign and reimagine the future of retail. Tesco’s purpose, strategy, structure, and culture were highlighted to reinforce alignment with evolving customer behaviour. The day culminated with a rewards and recognition session for Tesco Bengaluru colleagues.


Edmond Mesrobian, Chief Technology Officer, Tesco said, “The key to a successful organisation is to enable a one team culture. We are on a journey to create seamless experiences where we are constantly upgrading ourselves, meeting the need of the next generation that shops and reinventing propositions to create value for our customers. Our success journey is attributed to the high performing culture, dedication and disruptive thinking of our colleagues.”


Nandan Nilekani, during his key note address emphasised how technology is no longer ancillary today. “Technology done properly by reimagining businesses is the single biggest driver of change,” he added. He further stressed how setting ambitious goals and believing in a common vision would drive organisations to create changes that make a difference.


Speaking about the event, Vidya Laxman, Director - Technology, Tesco Bengaluru said, “One of the main objectives of organising the Technology Day was to enable our colleagues to gain insights from industry leaders and from Tesco. We hope for our colleagues to leverage their experiences in retail technology, and for the benefit of the larger ecosystem.”


The event concluded with felicitating winners of the recently held Hackathon that was conducted as a lead up to the Technology Day. The Hackathon which attracted more than 190 participants this year demonstrated Tesco Bengaluru’s commitment to encouraging creativity and innovation among its colleagues. The winners exhibited their models on enhanced shopping experiences, virtual reality retail games, and personalised advertisements at the event.
